Volcanoes of Yellowstone National Park, in the northwestern region of Wyoming, United States, showed signs of unusual activity.
According to the United States Geological Survey records, the terrain in the region has increased the speed of three inches or about 7.6 centimeters per year in the last three years. This growth was the highest since the start recorded in 1923.
"Growth in height is very unusual because it occurred in an area so vast and at very high speeds," said Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah, as reported by dailymail, March 9, 2011.
Initially, says Smith, the institute is concerned that this phenomenon will lead to the eruption of the volcano. "However, we found that the magma beneath the region is now located at a depth of 10 kilometers, so we do not panic," he said.
Even so, Smith said, if magma continues to rise by only 2 to 3 kilometers from the surface, that's when Americans really need to worry.
As is known, the mountains in Yellowstone National Park has erupted twice in terrible about 1.3 million years ago and about 642 thousand years ago. The last time erupted, spewing ash up to his height of 30 thousand feet, or approximately 9100 meters and the dust has closed the region ranging from western United States to the Gulf of Mexico.
The researchers predicted that if the phenomenon of rising ground in the region continues, this super volcano has the potential to erupt in the near future. If to erupt, then the two thirds parts of the United States will no longer be habitable.
Unfortunately, due to lack of data held from the last eruption, the researchers could not estimate when the next natural disaster will occur. To be sure, the massive eruption of this mountain will make Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland in April 2010 and then - which could damage flight schedules across the world - to look very small scale.
